A Fun Frame Reason for the Season Christmas Card

Before I get to the card I am sharing with you today, I would like to introduce you to the newest member of our family ...

This is BENTLEY, he is a 12 weeks old Miniature Schnauzer
He is just adorable, very intelligent and has settled into our family really quickly
He has also perked up our grieving 12 year old West Highland White Dog, Megan, and I am pleased to report she is in Mummy mode, eating and coming out of her bed to play. We feel much more relieved now, and have the noise back in our home that comes with having Dogs as part of our family.

There are 2 video's that go with today's tutorial. You will find both below
It is a simple card to make but I decided to do the first video showing you how to make the flower
and the second video talks & Demonstrates Dry Embossing

Anyhow, today's card demonstrates an alternative way of creating a 3 dimensional poinsettia  flower by learning how to cut stamped images freehand rather than using the Flower Builder Punch. The resulting flower is quite different from using the punch, whilst still using the Reason for the Season Two Step Photo-polymer Stamp Set from Stampin Up!
Cutting freehand seems to induce fear in many crafters, of all levels of experience.
I learnt my paper craft skills the old fashioned way as my Father worked in the print trade, and in my early 30's, I worked at my parents family business as a photo-typesetter and Paste Up Artist.
And that meant my tools were primarily a scalpel and a steel rule .... not scissors in sight ...
In the early days there was plenty of copy spoilt by my blood where the scalpel slipped and pricked or slashed my hands... but I learnt Quickly!

Reason for the Season Video Part One

The trick is to hold the scalpel or scissors  in a single point and rotate the paper or cardstock.
Not only does it leave a more aesthetic finish, but you have much more control over what you are doing. Give yourself a few hours practicing and you will be good to go.

My second tip, is to leave a 1mm edge of white (or whatever colour you are using) around the stamped image. This creates a frame, allowing the eye to identify what it is looking at.
Next time you are watching TV, look at the images, rather than the content. Not only will you see the never ending Bokeh (a bang on trend technique in photography & Paper Craft), but you will notice that actors always have a halo of 'white light' around their head/body .... and this in tern allows our brain to make sense of what it is seeing.

Reason for the Season Video Part Two

As always, below you will find the products I have used to create today's card

Table built using Product Table Builder by The Crafty Owl - Independent Stampin' Up! Demonstrator.
  • Begin by making your card base. Trim a piece of Thicker Whisper White Cardstock to 21 cms x 14.8 cms; Score the long side at 10.5 cms; fold and burnish with a bone folder; put to one side
  • Trim a piece of Real Red Cardstock to 14.4 cms x 10.1 cms
  • Trim a piece of Red Foiled Vellum to 9.7 cms x 6 cms; attach to the bottom of the cardstock using Fast Fuse Adhesive
  • Trim a piece of Whisper White cardstock to 9.7 cms x 8 cms; stamp with the sentiment using Archival Basic Black Classic Ink Pad
  • Dry Emboss the Sentiment using one of the Fun Frames Embossing Folders (TIEF)
  • Sponge the cardstock/sentiment with Real Red ink & mount onto the top section, above the Foiled Vellum using Fast Fuse Adhesive
  • Wrap around some Cherry Cobbler Thick Bakers Twine and tie a bow; Mount onto the card blank using some Fast Fuse Adhesive.
  • Onto Whisper White Cardstock, stamp the Poinsettia flower once in Old Olive and 3 times using Real Red. Using Paper Snips cut out the green flower/leaves; cut out 2 of the red flowers removing just the 'leaves'; and the third red flower, just cut out the small petals in the centre petals
  • Add some colour by sponging the flowers with the same ink used to stamp them.
  • Place Stampin Dimensionals on the back of each leaf (green) and flowers (red)
  • Layer up the flower with the green on the bottom, and the tiniest flower on the top.
  • Add a Snowflake Element using a Stampin Dimensional & mount onto your card front

And there you have it .... now it is your turn
